FAMILY LAW

While many people think of family law as focusing on divorce and marital dissolution issues, there are many other aspects to family law.

In addition to divorce and post-final judgment issues, our firm handles other aspects of family law such as paternity, and adoptions. There are also various issues regarding marital property that may arise even if a couple is not divorcing.

Adopting a child is a wonderful experience, providing a family with a new member and a loving home for a child in need. However, the adoption process can be very complex legally, and issues sometimes arise if the birth parents want to be involved in the child's life after the adoption. We assist clients in filling out and organizing the paperwork necessary for adoptions, and in drafting agreements between adoptive and birth parents, in both open and closed adoptions.

Paternity is also a complex area of the law, often more complex than most people might think. Paternity affects not only the father's rights to see his child, but also his obligation to support that child. We can assist you in filing or defending against an action for paternity, a suit in court that can be brought by either the mother or the father. DNA tests can rule out paternity with 100% accuracy, and determine paternity with 99.99% accuracy.

Our practice encompasses the full range of divorce proceedings, from uncontested dissolutions, to highly litigious divorces. We assist our clients in all issues involved in marital dissolution, including child custody, child support, visitation rights, alimony, business valuations, and property settlements. Orders of protection can be obtained before, after, or as part of the divorce. Our goal is to reach a solution not only in the best interests of our clients, but in the best interests of their children as well.

Sometimes, issues related to the dissolution arise after the divorce is finalized. Perhaps one of the spouses is not paying child or other support, or sometimes one of the parties is being denied visitation rights granted to them by the divorce decree. We handle these post-final judgment issues, such as failure to pay child support and modification of support agreements when financial situations change.
